Summer heat and alcohol consumption: Keep this in mind

For a lot of folks, summer is the best time of the year. They enjoy the sun, the community events, increased social gatherings and more.

There’s also a good deal of alcohol consumption that happens in the summer. While there’s nothing wrong with kicking back and cutting loose, you need to make sure that you remember that alcohol can affect you differently when the weather is warmer.

Dehydration can alter your mental state

Essentially, the biggest problem with summer drinking is that alcohol is dehydrating. When the weather is hot, dehydration can already be a problem for many people, so adding a few drinks into the mix can be problematic.

Worse still, the type of drinks people tend to drink in the summer can mask the effects of dehydration. Because beer, wine coolers and fruity mixed drinks are popular in the summer, the sheer volume of liquids and the sugar in them can fool you into believing you’re more hydrated than you really are.

Aside from the physical problems associated with dehydration and summer heat, there’s another danger: You could end up with a drunk driving charge. Even if you’re nowhere near your limit, dehydration can cause dizziness and confusion. Those problems, combined with any alcohol in your system at all, could be sufficient for a charge.
